We remember the excitement around the news of Alementary opening. The Hackensack area was in need of a local brewery and the proximity to the Ice House was great. That was just a few years ago (2016) but a lot has changed for craft beer lovers since then. We've been exposed to many more craft beers and brewers. Now Alementary doesn't seem as exciting anymore. It isn't all their fault. NJ brewery laws are lousy, real estate in the NY tri-state area is expensive, parking is always a challenge for breweries in a city and the health dept cracked down on them so they can no longer be a dog friendly establishment; and a dog is their mascot....that really stinks for them. Despite that, they've been successful in creating a nice looking space to have a beer. They routinely host food trucks/events and provide special release beers to keep things interesting.
We really appreciate the theme of Alementary being a brewers science lab (influenced by the founders previous professions) but we feel this is also their downfall. This part of the review is a challenge as it's tough to put in to words. But many in our group and others we've spoken to over the years, feel their beer is missing something. It's not as big as missing "soul" or "love" but many feel their beers taste like they have been "put together" rather than brewed. Could it be the scientist motif got in our psyche and the image of white coats, bunsen burners and beakers is making the beer taste "clinical"? Perhaps, but best to try for yourself.
There are a few other breweries now close by so this is an easy stop if you have the time to brewery hop. Only time for 1 brewery? This isn't our first choice. But if you find yourself there, get a flight of 4 ($10). Hackensack Lager was one of their first flagship beers which is ok and good to sample. Out of the flight, you may find one you love. And if they do have Arecibo on tap, it is the 1 beer we label a must try...especially if you like the style (Imperial Oatmeal Milk Stout) and don't have to drive (10.5% ABV).
